Volunteer Programmes

What we do

The Solèy Haiti volunteer projects are dual-focused. We run two Sports and Literacy Camps for children in the greater Gros-Morne area, and we help with the construction of houses for families in the same area.

All project costs, including the cost of food for the camps, the wages for the camp councellors and construction workers, and the construction materials, are paid for with the funds raised by the volunteers.

Camps

The Sports, Arts and Social Camps, known as JVT and Bigue, provide a safe environment for children between the age of 6 and 12 to learn and have fun. The children enrolled in the camps are chosen from amongst the poorest families in the greater Gros-Morne area by our local partners, the Sisters of RJM, and the camp directors.

Each volunteer is responsible for a class of 30-35 children for the duration of the four-week project. Each volunteer works with two Haitian camp counsellors and arranges three/four lessons per day. The lessons focus on English, French, Maths, Science, etc.. Sports, like football and basketball, will also be a daily part of camp. Each child receives two meals a day, breakfast and lunch, for the duration of the camp.

Construction

Volunteers work with local Haitian tradesmen on the construction of houses for local families. The Sisters of RJM decide, with the assistance of community leaders, which families are most in need of a new house. Volunteers are mainly involved in the manual labour side of the construction but there are many opportunities to learn from the skilled tradesmen.
